The Barton Highway is a trunk road in the southeast of the Australian state of New South Wales and in the north of the Australian Capital Territory . It connects the Hume Highway northeast of Yass with the Federal Highway and Northbourne Avenue (which leads to the Kings Highway and the Monaro Highway ) in the Australian capital Canberra .

history

The highway is named after Edmund Barton , Australia's first Prime Minister.

Originally the road ran through the middle of Yass, today the city is bypassed. The old section is called the Yass Valley Way . Since the number of commuters between Yass and Canberra has increased significantly in recent years, the Barton Highway is to be expanded into a motorway-like connection.

course

Around 10 km northeast of Yass, the Barton Highway branches off to the south from the Hume Highway (N31), the main route from Sydney to Melbourne . 3 miles further south it crosses the Yass Valley Way . Shortly before the Hall settlement , he crosses the border into the Australian Capital Territory. In the north of Canberra the road meets the Federal Highway (N23) and ends there. To the south leads Northbourne Avenue (R23) further to the town center Carberras.
