Before that, the area was only inhabited by Aborigines . From 1835 a small settlement developed on the south bank of the Yass River. The name of the place, Yass, is interpreted as a derivative of the Aboriginal word "Yhar", which means "flowing water". The Merino Horse Owning is still the largest agricultural branch in Yass and the surrounding places. Between 1901 and 1911, Yass was under discussion to become the federal capital of Australia instead of Canberra .
