The Federal Highway is a highway in the Australian state of New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory . It connects the Hume Highway west of Goulburn with the Barton Highway and Northbourne Avenue (which leads to the Kings Highway and the Monaro Highway ) in the Australian capital Canberra .

The motorway is part of the National Highway connection between Sydney and Canberra.

history

The Federal Highway was built as a trunk road in the 1930s and replaced the older connection via Tarago and Queanbeyan . Between 1985 and 2002, the road was expanded into a four-lane motorway.

course

About 11 km west of Goulburn, the Federal Highway branches off to the southwest from the Hume Highway (N31), the main road connecting Sydney and Melbourne . Along the west bank of Lake George it leads to Ginns Gap , where it crosses the border to the Australian Capital Territory . In the north of Canberra the road meets the Barton Highway (N25) and ends there. Northbourne Avenue (R23) continues south to Canberra city center.
