history

Aboriginal

Tumut was originally called Dumot . It is an Aboriginal name for "resting place by the river". The Wiradjuri and Ngunnawal have lived in these areas for about 20,000 years. Before European colonization, Tumut marked the borders of three Aboriginal tribes where they would congregate to hike into the Snowy Mountains when the Bogong butterflies were in the caterpillar stage . There they collected the massive bogong butterflies as food, to roast them in sand or ashes and then to eat them in one piece.

Europeans

In the 1820s the European colonizers arrived along the Murrumbidgee River and in 1824 Hamilton Hume and William Hovell arrived on their expedition on the Tumut River. The Tumut Post Office opened on January 1, 1849.

The place grew quickly and by 1856 there was a school and three hotels. In 1860 a newspaper reported about a cricket club in Tumut. When the gold rush in Kiandra began in 1860, about 1200 gold diggers went through the town into the Snowy Mountains. With the gold rush, bush robbers like William Brookman and his band of robbers Blue Cap Gang and James Kelly , Ned Kelly's brother , also came to the town. In 1880 there were 18 pubs in the village and today there are only six. The place was named a city in 1887, which was shaped by agriculture despite the gold rush. A bridge was built over the Murrumbidgee River in 1867 , and a railway line was laid from Gundagai to Tumut in 1884 , which was completed in 1903.

Tumut was included in the Australian Capital Territory as one of ten areas in 1908 . The other areas were: Albury , Armidale , Bombala , Dalgety , Lake George , Orange , Tooma , Lyndhurst and Yass -Canberra.

Since 1950 the place has developed into a center of the region. A butter factory was built, which is now the tourist office and the wood industry is located. From 1949 onwards, part of the population worked in the Snowy Mountains System dam project , at the nearby Blowering Dam , at the Talbingo Dam and in raising sheep and cattle.

There are many historic buildings in Tumut, the most important of which is the Anglican Church, designed by Edmund Blacket. Other historic buildings include: Tumut Court House and Police Station, Oriental Hotel, Bank Corner and Lombardy Poplars.

Timber industry

Tumut is a center of the wood industry with sawmills and paper mills, 20 to 30 percent of the population of Tumut work there. The largest plant is the Carter Holt Harvey Woodproducts on Adelong Road in the direction of the Snowy Mountains Highway and eight kilometers further it has another branch at Gilmore. The Visy pulp and paper mill is located north of the Snowy Mountains Highway near Gadara, between Tumut and Adelong . This paper mill is the only one on site that makes paper from wood, the other mills make paper from recycled material.
