Dalgety

Dalgety is a small village in the southeast of the Australian state of New South Wales . It is located in the Snowy River Shire on the banks of the Snowy River . Dalgety was once intended as the location of the new capital before Canberra was chosen . Today 205 people live here (as of 2016).

The name of the village was also the maiden name of the wife of J. R. Campbell, the geodesist who surveyed the future settlement. From 1837, the area was first known as Buckleys Crossing after a Mr. Barnes had settled here in 1848, also known as Barnes Crossing . The current name of the village was published in the Official Gazette in 1880.

Dalgety was once an important river crossing through which herds of cattle were driven from Gippsland to the alpine pastures in the Snowy Mountains from the 1840s . It was also a meeting place for the Aborigines of the Southeast, who gathered here to hunt Bogong butterflies in the mountains .

In 1904, Charles Scrivener recommended Dalgety as the capital city. The Australian Parliament in Melbourne approved this. But the government of New South Wales resisted this decision and threatened to leave the Australian Confederation because Dalgety was too close to Melbourne. As a result, new locations around Canberra were examined.
