An insert barrel is a barrel used for handguns that is inserted into the actual barrel of the weapon and locked. This is used to use smaller (usually cheaper) ammunition for training in shooting sports or in hunting. In the field of hunting, these insert barrels are also referred to as catch guns or reduction barrels .

Construction and use

A precondition for the use of plug-in barrels is a corresponding caliber difference to the basic weapon. Insert barrels with small calibers such as the .22 caliber are therefore widespread . There are larger barrel barrels for shotguns for firing cartridge ammunition and barrel barrel for rifles for firing reduced-caliber ammunition. Interchangeable barrels do not count as plug-in barrels, even if some military guns have technical similarities.

The following basic types of insert barrels exist:

  • Insert barrels are usually operated as single loaders . A few exceptions are variants for multi-loader operation , which were developed for the pistol 08 and for the Mauser 98 system (EL 24), for example .
  • Short insert barrels without any further mechanics that are inserted into the chamber of a firearm. This type is mainly used for handguns and can also be used for revolvers .
  • Muzzle- length insert barrels for single-shot guns . This type is preferably used for multi-barreled weapons and is usually set up specifically for this purpose.
  • Insert barrels with locking cylinder (chamber) for repeating weapons (so-called insert systems), which are inserted into the locking sleeve instead of the normal device . This type can be short or mouth length. As early as the pre-war years, the Erma machine factory in Erma had various insert barrels of the Erma EL 24 type for bolt action rifles based on the Mauser System 98 . From 1975 insert barrels of a similar type were produced and sold by Voere under the designation Model 2118 for the caliber .22 lfB .

Gun Law

In Germany, in contrast to an interchangeable barrel, a plug-in barrel does not have to be entered in the owner's gun ownership card , since acquisition and possession are permit-free in accordance with Section 2, Subsection 2, Item 2a of the Annex to Section 2, Paragraphs 2–4 of the Weapons Act (WaffG) , provided that the barrel is intended for a firearm that is already entered on the gun ownership card.
