Coordinates: 35 ° 28 ' S , 148 ° 21' O Tumut Shire was a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area was 4,566 km² and last had about 11,000 inhabitants. In 2016 the Snowy Valleys Council got it going.
Tumut was located in the southeast of the state and borders the Australian capital Canberra to the east . The area comprised 75 hamlets and villages, including Adelong, Argalaong, Batlow, Blowering, Brungle, Cabramurra , Gilmore, Gocup, Grahamstown, Kunama, Lacmalac, Minjary, Talbingo , Tumorrama, Tumut , Talbingo, Wondalga, Wyangle and Yarrangobilly. The seat of the Shire Council was in the city of Tumut in the northeast of the LGA, where now about 6,200 inhabitants live.

The Tumut Shire Council had seven members who were elected by LGA residents. Tumut was not divided into districts. The mayor of the council was also recruited from among the councilors.
