Talbingo

Talbingo is a small town in New South Wales , Australia at the end of the Snowy Mountains on the Snowy Mountains Highway . The place is 451 km from Sydney and is 410 meters above sea level on the Tumut River , which is also called Jounama Pondage .

The place name is probably composed of the English word tall (German: large) and the Aboriginal word Binji , Binge or Bingo (German: belly). Mount Talbingo, located near the village, is shaped like the big belly of a lying man.

history

The post office in Talbingo opened on June 6, 1898, closed in 1913 and reopened in 1965. The original location was flooded by the Jounama Pondage River in 1968 and rebuilt in another location by the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme . Before the village was destroyed, there was a hotel, farm, gas station and holiday accommodation. It was a small settlement with five families. The Talbingo gas station was the birthplace of author Miles Franklin , who belonged to her relatives until 1940.

Talbingo today

The new Talbingo grew rapidly as jobs were created by the largest hydroelectric power station in Australia, the Snowy Mountains System at the Talbingo Dam . Furthermore, there is now a gas station, golf course, motel, elementary school, grocery store, tourist park and accommodation, ski rental and restaurant.

The place also lives from tourism. Many families come to the dam in summer for water skiing or hiking in Kosciuszko National Park . In winter, skiers come to Talbingo on the Selwyn Snowfields or other ski areas in the Snowy Mountains.
