The national park is located in the Snowy Mountains and surrounds its namesake, Mount Kosciuszko , which is the highest mountain on the continent at 2228 m. Due to the high altitude, the park has an exceptional alpine climate for Australia with corresponding vegetation and the landscape shows traces of an earlier glaciation. Also in the park is Mount Townsend , the second highest mountain on the mainland of the Australian continent at 2209 m.

The national park was established in June 1944 and is the largest in New South Wales.
