Cabramurra

At 1,488 meters above sea level, Cabramurra is one of the highest places on the Australian continent . The place is in the west of the Snowy Mountains in the Great Dividing Range of New South Wales . The name Cabramurra could come from the Wiradjuri language with gambirra marra , which means "crooked hand" (crooked hand). Canberra is 223 km and Cooma is 109 km away.

Site plan of the Synowy Mountains System with Cabramurra

The place, which lies within the Kosciuszko National Park , was founded in 1954 for the workers as part of the Snowy Mountains System , one of the largest dams on earth. It was initially called Ghent's Camp, which was built in 1951 to build two waterworks and the Tumut Pondage Dam .

The camp was developed into a locality by Snowy Hydro , the owner of the Snowy Mountains System. Today the place has a general store, a gas station, a primary school, a restaurant with a swimming pool, a ski slope and a tennis court. Tourists will not find any overnight accommodation in the place, they can only eat in the restaurant in the general store. The closest smaller towns are Adaminaby and Tumut .

The historic gold rush town of Kiandra , north of the Snowy Mountains Highway , and the Selwyn Snowfields ski area are in the vicinity. In winter, snow can lie in Cabramurra for three to four months, which is why attention was paid to a special incline of the roofs during construction, which give the houses a special character. The Cabramurra ski slope has been expanded to become Australia's first illuminated night ski slope.

From Cabramurra, Tumut Ponds Dam can be reached via Khancoban Road. The way there leads through burned forests, which essentially consist of tree stumps.
