Miles Franklin
Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin , shortly Miles Franklin (* 14. October 1879 in Talbingo , New South Wales ; † 19th September 1954 in Drummoyne , New South Wales) was an Australian writer. The prestigious Miles Franklin Literary Award is presented annually from her estate .
Life
The eldest daughter of John Maurice and Margaret Susannah Helena Franklin finished her first novel, My Brilliant Career, at the age of 20 after having worked as governess for two years . However, publication in Australia was rejected, so that it was not until two years later, in 1901, that the first edition of this book was published in London . In addition to her intensive contacts with other Australian writers such as Joseph Furphy and Henry Lawson , she worked as a freelance journalist for several daily newspapers .
She saw writing as her way to self-employment and left Australia in 1906 for the USA . While continuing her writing career there, she served for the next nine years for the National Women's Trade Union League in Chicago . In 1915 she moved to London, where she lived until 1927. During this time she worked, among other things, as a volunteer for the Scottish Women's Hospitals for Foreign Service. After only about two years in Australia, she returned to London in 1929, mainly to find publishers for her works.
After the death of her father, however, she returned permanently to Australia in 1932, and became one of the most important figures on the Sydney literary scene . Convinced of the independence of Australian literature , she campaigned, among other things, to promote new publications and young authors.
