The dam is 112 meters high and was formed from excavated earth and rocks. The volume of the water in the reservoir is 1,628,000 megaliters (million liters). The lake's water is used for irrigation and to generate electricity.

In April 2009, the New South Wales government commissioned $ 33 million to secure the dam to prevent flooding. The construction project is expected to last until 2011.

In the reservoir there are trout and pikeperch , some of which are protected. The Snowy Mountains Highway runs past the dam .

The Australian racing boat driver Ken Warby holds the current world speed record of 511.13 km / h on the water, which he achieved on October 8, 1978 on the Blowering Dam with his boat Spirit of Australia . To this day, he is the only person who drove faster than 300 miles on the water. The Spirit of Australia was designed and built by Warby himself.
