Orange is a city in the Australian state of New South Wales , about 250 kilometers west of Sydney . The population is around 37,000.
The most important industries in the city include mining . The cultivation of fruit also plays an important role, mainly apples , pears , cherries and peaches are grown. In 1851 the first gold discoveries in Australia led to the first Australian gold rush in the nearby village of Ophir .
The city is on an important main road to Sydney and is a rail hub. The main route is to Sydney, one to Dubbo and another to Molong . In Molong the route forks again: one route leads to Dubbo and another to Adelaide .
Orange is the center and administrative seat of the local administrative area Orange City .

Orange currently has four city partnerships: since 1963 with the Californian city of Orange in the USA , since 1985 with Mount Hagen in the Western Highlands province in Papua New Guinea , since 1986 with the New Zealand city of Timaru and since 1990 with Ushiku in the Japanese prefecture of Ibaraki .
