Marysville is a city in Victoria , Australia . The city became internationally known when a bush fire largely destroyed the place on February 7, 2009 .

The city is 75 kilometers northeast of Melbourne in the Murrindindi Shire on Marysville Road. At the 2016 census, Marysville had 342 residents.

history

The town was founded as a stop on the way to the gold mines of Woods Point and Upper Goulburn, in 1864 there was already a butcher and a shop. The place was named after Mary Steavenson, wife of the Assistant Commissioner of Roads and Bridges John Steavenson, after whom the Steavenson Falls were named. The post office went into operation on March 1, 1865, a school followed in 1870 and other public institutions in 1890.

In the 1920s, Marysville became a tourist destination. At that time there were twelve guest houses. At that time, rail traffic between Melbourne and Marysville was started via Healesville.

Marysville's primary industry is tourism, for which there are numerous cafes, restaurants, art galleries and handicraft shops in town. The place serves as the starting point for the ski area around Lake Mountain . There are various bed and breakfasts , campsites and other accommodation facilities in the village . During the winter season, the number of guests far exceeds the number of residents.

For this reason, the inhabitants are against forestry, which threatens the local primeval forests and thus tourism. Marysville is mainly dependent on tourism, with only three percent of local economic management in 1995 from agriculture, forestry and fishing.
