Hopetoun House is a castle in the Scottish Lowlands . It is not far from South Queensferry about 15 km west of central Edinburgh .

history

Most of Hopetoun House was built in the Georgian style between 1699 and 1707 according to plans by the architect Sir William Bruce . In this first phase of construction, the central building was created with the representative staircase and numerous ceiling paintings . The second construction phase followed from 1721 to 1767, in which the present facade, the colonnades and the northern and southern pavilions were built. The second construction phase was based on plans by the architect William Adam , who died during the construction work in 1748. The work was therefore completed under the direction of Adam's two sons, John and Robert. At the beginning of the 19th century, some renovations were carried out, but these only affected the interior of the castle. The State Dining Room designed by James Gillespie Graham is regarded as an interior design masterpiece .
