history

Alexander Drummond of Midhope of the Clan Drummond is considered to be the builder of Midhope Castle, which was built in the late 16th century . It later passed to the Earls of Linlithgow of Clan Livingstone . Two extensions on the east side were added at an unspecified time in the 17th century. The Hope family acquired the building in 1678 and added it to their property to the east of Hopetoun House . In 1926, Midhope Castle was still inhabited. Previously it had been divided into individual residential units, which were made available to the employees of the property. In 1962 the building was finally described as vacant and in poor condition. Restoration work was carried out around 1990.

The scenes from the TV series Outlander , based on the books of the Highland saga by Diana Gabaldon , which played on Lallybroch, were filmed at Midhope Castle .

description

Midhope Castle is about four kilometers west of South Queensferry near the south bank of the Firth of Forth near the Midhope Burn creek . The original four-story Tower House was built from quarry stone and has a square floor plan. Alone at the crowd watch towers this was carved into blocks. The gables of the slate-covered gable roof are made as a stepped gable . On the north-facing front is the Renaissance- style entrance portal, which is crowned by a segmented gable with the initials G. L. The three-story east wing dates from the 17th century. The entrance gate was added at the same time. Its segment arch is made of ashlar.
