Horace Brodzky
Horace Ascher Brodzky (born January 30, 1885 in the Kew district of Melbourne in Victoria , Australia , † February 11, 1969 in Kilburn , London ) was an Australian artist .
Early life
Brodzky came from a Jewish family of seven children. His father, Maurice Brodsky, a journalist who immigrated to Australia from the Ukraine in 1871, was the editor of an art illustrated which was well known beyond the Melbourne art scene and which was published weekly until the turn of the 19th century.
Artistic life
Horace Brodzky studied at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School in Melbourne, then traveled to San Francisco and New York and settled in London at the age of 23 and attended the City and Guilds Art School in Kennington .
From 1914 he exhibited his expressionist works, which mainly focused on the representation of the human body. He was a supporter of the Vorticist art movement and an early member of the avant-garde artist group The London Group . In the London Group he exhibited together with Walter Sickert , Spencer Gore and Lucien Pissarro and cultivated close relationships with David Bomberg , Jacob Epstein , Henri Gaudier-Brzeska , Ezra Pound and Wyndham Lewis . He traveled through Italy in 1911 with his friend, the American poet John Gould Fletcher , where he met the work of the Renaissance artist Piero della Francesca , which had a great influence on his subsequent work. In 1920 he exhibited together with Pablo Picasso .
In 1912 he was the first Australian artist to exhibit modern art at the Venice Biennale . Later he also experimented with cubist works.
Brodzky's work can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum , British Museum , Ashmolean Museum , Museum of Modern Art , National Gallery of Australia, and in numerous public and private collections.
