The Macintyre River is a river in the northeast of the Australian state of New South Wales . In part it forms the border between New South Wales and Queensland .

course

The source lies on the western slopes of Mount Rumbee, northwest of Guyra and southwest of Glen Innes in the tabular country of New England . From there the river flows northwest through Inverell , Ashford and Yetman .

A few kilometers east of Boggabilla flows into the Dumaresq River , which until then forms the border to Queensland. To the west of the estuary, the Macintyre River forms this boundary and flows west between Boggabilla and Goondiwindi . It branches off into the Barwon River and the Boomi River in front of Mungindi .

Tributaries of the Macintyre River are the Swanbrook Creek , which flows into Inverell, the Severn River with its mouth at Ashford and the Dumaresq River, which flows into Boggabilla. These rivers are part of the Border Rivers , a group of rivers on the border between the two states.

The Macintyre River is often in flood and the largest city on the river, Goondiwindi, has flood walls that can withstand water levels up to 11 m above normal, as occurred during the great floods in Queensland at the turn of 2010/2011.
