The Severn River is a river in the north of the Australian state of New South Wales .

geography

It has its source in the Northern Tableland of New England near Dundee north of the city of Glen Innes . It flows northwest to Pindari Dam east of Ashford and then on through the Kwiambal National Park , where he in the Macintyre River flows .

Tributaries

Its major tributaries are Beardy Waters and Wellinggrove Creek .

fauna and Flora

The entire river is known as good fishing water. The codfish Maccullochella peelii and Macquaria ambigua commonly spawn in the Severn River .

A particularly rare plant, the myrtle family Micromyrtus grandis (English Severn River Heath-myrtle ), can be found endemic in the Severn River Nature Reserve and adjacent lands on the Pindari Reservoir, approx. 60 km northwest of Glen Innes.

Attractions

The railway bridge over the Severn River is six kilometers west-southwest of Dundee and is no longer used as part of the old north line in New South Wales, but is a National Heritage Site of Australia. This bridge consists of timber frameworks, was completed in 1886 and is 159 m long with its 15 bridge sections. At that time it was the longest timber frame bridge in Australia.

Surname

This Severn River has nothing to do with the northern river of the same name in Queensland . The naming of both rivers with the same name is due to different explorers who acted independently of each other.
