Border Rivers

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Border Rivers (dt .: border rivers) refers to a number of rivers (and the region, flowing through it) on the border of the Australian states of New South Wales and Queensland . They originate in the New England tabular country , are the headwaters of the Darling River and drain the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range in this area. The eastern border of the catchment area of the Border Rivers stretches along the ridge of the Great Divide Mountains from Stanthorpe in Queensland to Guyra in New South Wales.

Arms of the river

Various arms of the river with different names form part of the New South Wales / Queensland border between Tenterfield and Mungindi . Ineptly, there are arms with the same name (Macintyre River / Brook and Severn River), but they designate very different rivers, one in each of the two states. On the other hand, the same river was given different names by different explorers in different places. It was only later discovered that they were always the same river; but the traditional names remained. The Border Rivers flow into the Macintyre River , which is called the Barwon River further downstream and which is the left headwaters of the Darling River , which in turn flows into the Murray River in southwest New South Wales .

Between Mungindi and Boggabilla the state border runs along the Macintyre River (New South Wales). Above the mouth of the Dumaresq River (a few kilometers east of Boggabilla) the border follows the Dumaresq River upstream and the upper reaches of the Macintyre River lies entirely in New South Wales.

Settlements

The main economic activity in the Border Rivers region is agriculture. Grain is grown on suitable areas and the remaining lands are used as grassland for cattle. Since the rivers are rather small and do not have a constant water flow throughout the year, there are only small irrigation systems.

The largest city on the Border Rivers is Goondiwindi in Queensland, where the Newell Highway crosses the Macintyre River and the state line.

The cities of Stanthorpe (Queensland), Tenterfield (New South Wales) and Glen Innes (New South Wales) are located on the New England Highway on the eastern edge of the Border Rivers Basin. Inverell is on the western edge of the New England Tableland.

The middle part of the Border Rivers is rather sparsely populated; there are no major cities or major roads and no industry to speak of. Smaller towns in this area are:

  • Texas (Queensland)
  • Inglewood, Queensland
  • Ashford (New South Wales)
  • Yetman (New South Wales)
  • Bonshaw (New South Wales)
  • Emmaville (New South Wales).
