Tenterfield is a place in the Australian state of New South Wales on the Great Dividing Range at the north end of the New England Highway . It is located about 18 kilometers from the Queensland border and has a population of around 2,900.
Due to its altitude, Tenterfield has all four seasons, which is not exactly common in Australia. In autumn the colored foliage of the trees is just as interesting as in the American Indian summer . Winter offers a mixture of relatively warm days and mostly cold and clear nights.
Tenterfield is also known in Australia as " The Birthplace of Our Nation ", as Sir Henry Parkes gave his famous speech on the Australian Federation here on October 24, 1889. That speech eventually led to the Federation of All Australian States on January 1, 1901.
The composer and entertainer Peter Allen came from this place and dedicated the song "The Tenterfield Saddler" to his grandfather.
Tenterfield is the center and administrative seat of the Tenterfield Shire local government .
