Coordinates: 29 ° 2 '  S , 152 ° 1'  O Tenterfield Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 7,322.8 km² and has about 6,600 inhabitants.

Tenterfield is located in the far northeast of the state about 720 km north of the metropolis of Sydney and 270 km southwest of Brisbane . The area comprises 104 hamlets and towns, including Bismuth, Black Swamp, Bolivia, Boonoo Boonoo, Bryans Gap, Bungulla, Clifton, Deepwater, Leechs Gully, Legume, Liston, Mingoola, Mole River, Sandy Flat, Sandy Hill, Silent Grove, Sunnyside , The Scrub, Stannum, Steinbrook, Tarban, Tenterfield , Torrington and Tungsten. The seat of the Shire Council is in the town of Tenterfield in the center of the LGA, where about 3,000 people live.

The Tenterfield Shire Council has ten members elected by residents of the five wards (two each from Wards A through E). These five districts are defined independently of the localities. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
