The Josefinum is a specialist hospital in the Augsburg district of Oberhausen and is known far beyond the borders of Augsburg as a clinic for gynecology , obstetrics , paediatrics and child psychiatry .

location

The hospital is located on Kapellenstrasse north of Kapellen-Mittelschule . The Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul is adjacent to the east .

The Josefinum can be reached with the stop "Josefinum" of the city bus lines 21, 27 and 35 of the Augsburg transport association . The nearest tram in front of the nearby train station Augsburg-Oberhausen , where connection to various regional trains from and towards Central Station is.

history

During the First World War , Josef Mayer, a senior teacher at the chapel school in Oberhausen, founded a day nursery together with the parish priest Johann Blödt in 1916 under the impression of many impoverished war orphans. As a result, two years later, a day nursery started work on Kapellenstrasse, which was placed under the patronage of St. Joseph . A little later, an infant station was attached to the day care center. The children were looked after by nuns from the monastery of the Franciscan Sisters of Maria Stern . The nursery was sponsored in 1923 by the Catholic Youth Welfare Service of the Diocese of Augsburg , which still operates the hospital today. The facility was first named "Josefinum" in 1952 on the occasion of the 80th birthday of its founder Josef Mayer.

The obstetrical department of the hospital was opened in 1957, the gynecological clinic in 1969. In the same year the internal pediatric wards were set up, and neonatology and pediatric surgery had already become the focus of the Josefinum in previous years. In 1978 the Swabian district commissioned the hospital with child and adolescent psychiatric care, which was further intensified at the end of the century by the establishment of branch offices in Kempten (Allgäu) and Nördlingen . The department for pediatric psychosomatics in the Josefinum followed in 2000. Since 2011 the Josefinum has been undergoing an all-round renovation, which should be completed in 2020.

features

The hospital has a total of 388 planned  beds and also has large capacities for outpatient treatment. Around 900 medical and non-medical employees are employed in the Josefinum, which consists of three clinics: the women's clinic, the clinic for children and adolescents and the clinic for child and adolescent psychiatry.

Women's Clinic

The gynecological clinic gives the Josefinum its national reputation as a maternity hospital : with around 3,000 births per year, the Josefinum is the largest maternity hospital in Augsburg and one of the ten largest maternity clinics in Germany, in front of the Augsburg Clinic . The women's clinic includes a perinatal center (level I) and a special outpatient department for prenatal diagnostics . A special feature of the Josefinum is the possibility of carrying out an anonymous birth - the mother-to-be keeps her identity to herself. This process is currently still a legal gray area in Germany. The Josefinum is also a certified breast center , so it fulfills special requirements in the treatment of breast cancer .

The majority of the patients at the women's clinic are treated by the permanent staff of the Josefinum. In addition, patients have the option of receiving medical treatment from their own resident gynecologists from the Augsburg area .

Clinic for children and adolescents

In the children's clinic, children of all ages from premature babies to young adults are treated. General pediatric care, pediatric gastroenterology, sleep medicine, pediatric pneumology, allergology, pediatric rheumatology, neuropediatrics and other specialist areas are offered.

Clinic for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

The clinic for child and adolescent psychiatry and psychotherapy offers local care at three locations in Augsburg, Nördlingen and Kempten (Allgäu) .

Student teaching

The Josefinum is registered as an academic teaching hospital of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . The clinic is used to train medical students in the last phase of their studies, the so-called “practical year”. Irrespective of this, the Josefinum is also open to medical students to complete the mandatory nursing internships and clinical traineeships .
