The Gwydir Highway is a trunk road in the northeast of the Australian state of New South Wales . It connects the Pacific Highway in Grafton with the Castlereagh Highway north of Walgett .

Origin of name

The street is named after the Gwydir River , the lower reaches of which it accompanies in its western part. The river is named after a small town in Wales .

course

The Gwydir Highway crosses the New England region from the coast, over the Great Dividing Range to the plains inland.

In Grafton, the highway branches off from the Pacific Highway to the west-northwest, following the Clarence River . On the western edge of the Gibraltar Range National Park, she climbs the eastern ramp of the Great Dividing Range and turns to the west-southwest. In Glen Innes it crosses the New England Highway (N15) and continues its way west to Inverell .

In Inverell, the Gwydir Highway crosses the Macintyre River and continues on its way west-northwest again. Via Delungra he reaches the city of Warialda . Between Glen Innes and Warialda, the Fossickers Way runs together with the Gwydir Highway. In Warialda he turns south, towards Tamworth . Soon after Warialda the road reaches the Gwydir River and in Moree it crosses the Newell Highway (N39). The Gwydir River accompanies the road west to its confluence with the Barwon River .

The Gwydir Highway crosses the Barwon River at Collarenebri and follows it downstream on its northwest bank to 14 km north of Walgett. There it ends on the Castlereagh Highway (R55).
