The Mehi River is a river in the northeast of the Australian state of New South Wales , which splits off from the Gwydir River about 13 miles east of Moree . From there, the river flows west through the town of Moree and finally flows into the Barwon River around 11 km northeast of Collarenebri .

history

This river, which stretches approximately 160 km from its junction at Tareelaroi Weir to its mouth, was formerly called the Gwydir River or Meei River .

Bridge over the Mehi River in Moree

In 1889 a wooden bridge was built over the Mehi River in Moree. Another bridge over the river was built there in April 1960. The Geographical Names Board of New South Wales officially named the 160 km long arm of the Gwydir River in 1975 the Mehi River , ending confusion about its naming. In December 1995 a new bridge was built over the Mehi River west of Moree.

The Mehi River regularly floods the city of Moree. Various attractive parks, golf courses and recreational areas are located on its banks. The marina in Moree is popular with water sports enthusiasts. The Gwydir Highway is also frequently flooded by the Gwydir River and the Mehi River; it runs between Moree and Collarenembri on the island that forms the two rivers.

In 2008 plans arose for a fish ladder near Moree, which would open a 300 km long “motorway” between the Copeton reservoir and Collarenembri for the local fish . The Barwon River - Gwydir CMA has earmarked AU $ 175,000 for the Moree Plains Shire to install this fish ladder on the Moree weir.

fauna

Native fish that are found in the Gwydir-Mehi-River system are Nematalosa erebi (bony bream) from the herring family , the codfish Maccullochella peelii (Murray cod) and Macquaria ambigua (golden perch or yellowbelly), the tiger fish Leiopotherapon unicolor (spangled perch) and the Tauwels ( tandanus tandanus , eel-tailed catfish) from the family of Aalwelse .
