Coordinates: 29 ° 20 ′ S , 149 ° 47 ′ O Moree Plains Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 17,906.5 km² and has about 13,200 inhabitants.
Moree Plains is located in the north of the state on the border with Queensland about 650 km north of the metropolis of Sydney and 475 km southwest of Brisbane . The area consists of 79 hamlets and villages, including Boggabilla, Gurley, Moree, Mungindi , Pallamallawa and Weemelah. The seat of the Shire Council is in Moree in the eastern half of the LGA, where about 7,400 inhabitants live.

The Moree Plains Shire Council has twelve members who are elected by LGA residents. Moree Plains is not divided into districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
