Coordinates: 35 ° 39 ′  S , 144 ° 37 ′  E Murray Shire was a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area was 4,345 km² and last had about 7,000 inhabitants. In 2016 it went up in the Murray River Council .

Murray was about halfway along the state's southern border north of the Murray River, about 570 km west of the Australian capital Canberra and 260 km north of the metropolis of Melbourne . The area comprised 33 hamlets and villages: Barmah, Barnes, Brassi, Bullatale, Bunnaloo, Caldwell, Calimo, Cornalla, Cummeragunja, Gulpa, Hill Plain, Maloga, Mathoura, Moama, Moira, Moonahcullah, Old Cobram, Peeroo, Perricoota, Picnic Point , Stevens Weir, Tantonan, Tarragon, tataila, Thyra, Tumudeery, Walliston, Warbreccan, Werai, Womboota and Yallakool as well as parts of Deniliquin and Thule. The seat of the Shire Council was on the eastern edge of the LGA in Mathoura, where around 660 people live today.

The Murray Shire Council had nine members who were elected by LGA residents. Murray wasn't divided into districts. The mayor of the council was also recruited from among the councilors.
