Jerwand Kochar
Jerwand Kotschar ( Armenian Երվանդ Քոչար ; born June 15, 1899 in Tbilisi , † January 22, 1979 in Yerevan ) was an Armenian painter and sculptor .
Jerwand Kotschar graduated from the Nersisian School in Tbilisi and studied painting in Moscow . In 1922 he emigrated to Paris , where he lived and worked until 1936. There he had exhibitions together with Georges Braque , Henri Matisse , Pablo Picasso , Fernand Léger , Giorgio De Chirico . Jerwand Kochar belonged to the Paris school. He processed many influences of his time such as cubism and futurism . After his emigration to Armenia in 1936 he became known as a sculptor. After 1945 he also exhibited in Paris. His best-known work is the monumental equestrian statue of David von Sasun , executed from 1965 , which was erected in front of the Jerevans train station. For this work he received the Armenian State Prize in 1967. In 1975, another equestrian statue of Vardan Mamikonian was unveiled. Kochar died in 1979. A museum named after him was opened in Yerevan in 1984.
