The Castlereagh Highway is an 816 km long highway in the east of the Australian state of New South Wales , the northern end of which is about 160 km within the borders of Queensland . The highway was recently extended and now includes State Route 86 south of Gilgandra . To the south, it starts just outside Lithgow at the junction with the Great Western Highway and runs northwest through Ilford , Mudgee and Gulgong . From here the road runs together with the Golden Highway through Dunedoo and branches off here again, through Gilgandra until it reaches the border with Queensland via Walgett near Hebel . After another 162 km the Castlereagh Highway ends in St. George where it meets the Carnarvon Highway .

The highest point on the highway is 1070 m, the lowest is 130 m.

From the Great Western Highway near Lithgow to Gilgandra the highway is signposted as State Road 86 (S86), from Gilgandra to the Queensland border at Hebel as National Road 55 (R55). In Queensland, the Castlereagh Highway is called A55.
