Dirranbandi is a small town in the southwest of the Australian state of Queensland . It is located in the Local Government Area Balonne Shire , on the Castlereagh Highway and on the Balonne River . The last census in 2006 found a population of 361.

economy

The population is growing steadily as seasonal workers come to work in the vast cotton fields. Because of the low annual rainfall, the fields are intensively irrigated. Dirranbandi is close to Cubbie Station , the largest private cotton farmer in the southern hemisphere.

history

Dirranbandi, which was founded in 1885, is located in the ancestral territory of the Aboriginal Kooma tribe . But the indigenous people in Dirranbandi count themselves among the Kamilaroi .

It is said that in the Aboriginal language the name means swamp with very many frogs and water birds . However, there is no clear indication that this is the case in any of the local Aboriginal languages. Rather, the name seems to be derived from a place name in the local Yuwaliyaay dialect, Dhurrunbandaay . This name is said to have something to do with dhurrun gal (German: hairy caterpillars) and baanda-y (German: move into the Indian nudes). There is also a noun dhirrinbaa in the Yulawaalaraay dialect, which in German means bad weather camp on elevated terrain . This is apparently composed of dhirrin (German: elevated terrain) and -baa (suffix for German: place, place).

The railroad reached Dirranbandi on May 22, 1913. Dirranbandi had the honor of being the destination of the last mail train in Australia.

During the great flood in 2010 , Dirranbandi was also flooded. Some farmers lost a lot of livestock as a result. For others it was also a very good year.

literature

The fictional protagonist Les Norton from many of the novels by the Australian writer Robert G. Barret comes from Dirranbandi.
