Kamilaroi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kamilaroi , also known as Gamilaraay , are an Aboriginal tribe who live between Tamworth and Goondiwindi , west of Narrabri , Walgett and Lightning Ridge in northern New South Wales . In the southwest of Australia , their land stretches from Coonabarabran to the Warrumbungle Ranges of Warrumbungle National Park .

Settlement

The settlement by the Europeans had the consequence for this people that the population decreased in the period from 1839 to 1845 from 6,500 to 7,000 to 3,000. The Kamilaroi were no longer forced to live freely in the wild, but in the settlements of the Europeans. They were originally one of the largest Aboriginal tribes in eastern Australia, the largest being the Wiradjuri tribe . The destruction of the Kamilaroi culture and way of life continued when, from 1909, missionaries from the northwest invaded the Kamilaroi area. Some of the Kamilaroi families saw whites for the first time and were forced to work for the settlers, or they were driven from their traditional places and taken to reservations. From 1909 the government of Australia began to set up institutions to house Aboriginal children they took away from their families. This started the time of the stolen generation for the Kamilaroi people as well.

Naming

The name Gamilaraay means have nothing in their language and comes from gamil for nothing and araay for possession. The name of the Aborigine can be found in the street name Kamilaroi Highway and the ferry Kamilaroi was operated by Sydney Ferries Limited from 1901 to 1933. There are other examples of the use of this name.

Dream time

The dream time of the Kamilaroi relates to Baiame , the creator of the earth, of all things and beings. Baiame had Birrahgnooloo as his wife, who gave birth to Daramulum. The northern Kamilaroi have strong ties with the bigambul people with whom they hold ceremonies in the Boobera Lagoon .

The Kamilario practiced an initiation for their 10 year old boys, the Bora , in order to release them into manhood. This ritual was held in special places and at Terry Hie Hie, the largest Kamilaroi bora ceremonial site, 60 kilometers from Moree .

In the tradition of the Kamilaroi, the totems are passed on through the maternal line and divided into animals such as snakes , possum , wallaby , etc. The rules are strict because, for example, it is not allowed to marry someone who has the same totem.

Alternative names

Alternative names of the Kamilaroi are: Gomeroi, Gamilaroi, Gumillaroy and Comelroy, which result from the European transliteration . Gomeroi also means rising sun. The Kamilaroi are one of the four major Aboriginal tribes in Australia.
