Capatárida was a village of the Caquetío Indians. In 1525, two years after Juan de Ampiés founded the city of Coro , he visited this settlement. The village was declared a Free Indian Village by royal decree so it did not have to pay any tax. In 1664 it was recognized as a pueblo de doctrina (mission village). It was administered by the Catholic Church in Coro. It was the administrative seat of the state at the end of the 19th century. In 1862, a very important Federation War battle took place nearby.
