Coordinates: 28 ° 2 ′ S , 148 ° 34 ′ E The Shire of Balonne is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland . The area is 31,103.7 km² and has about 4,400 inhabitants.
geography
The Shire is located on the state's southern border with New South Wales about 440 km west of the capital Brisbane .
The largest town and administrative seat of the LGA is Sts George on the Balonne River with about 2,400 inhabitants. Other localities are Bollon, Dirranbandi , Hebel, Mungindi , Nindigully and Thallon.
history
The first expedition came to the area around 1846 and named the Balonne River after a word from the native language. The settlement around St George began in 1864 and 15 years later the district of Ula Ula emerged, which was renamed Balonne in 1903.
administration
The Balonne Shire Council has five members. The Mayor and four other Councilors are elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
