St. George is a small outback town in southwest Queensland , Australia . It is located about 520 kilometers from Brisbane and about 390 kilometers from Toowoomba on the Balonne River . The city has a population of around 3800 and is the seat of the Local Administrative Area (LGA) Balonne Shire Council . The city got its name from the explorer Thomas Livingstone Mitchell , who crossed the Balonne River on April 23, 1846, St. George's Day, and called this place St. Georges Bridge. The city was founded on this site in 1862.

St. George is a regional center of agriculture. It is one of Australia's most important cotton growing areas . Wheat, fruits and vegetables are just as important, however, as are cattle and sheep breeding. The Balonne River and the water reservoirs around the city offer very good opportunities for fishing.

St. George is a major transportation hub in southwest Queensland. Several major highways meet in and around the city: from Cunnamulla in the west the Balonne Highway , from Roma in the north and from Mungindi in the south the Carnarvon Highway , from Dalby in the east the Moonie Highway and from Dubbo in New South Wales the Castlereagh Highway .

One of the city's attractions is an impressive collection of emu eggs . The eggs were created by Steve Margaritis over a period of 40 years. He carved patterns into the eggs by hand and lit them from the inside. The eggs have already been shown at several world exhibitions and international shows. Today the Emuier are shown as a permanent exhibition in St. George.
