St. George is a regional center of agriculture. It is one of Australia's most important cotton growing areas . Wheat, fruits and vegetables are just as important, however, as are cattle and sheep breeding. The Balonne River and the water reservoirs around the city offer very good opportunities for fishing.
One of the city's attractions is an impressive collection of emu eggs . The eggs were created by Steve Margaritis over a period of 40 years. He carved patterns into the eggs by hand and lit them from the inside. The eggs have already been shown at several world exhibitions and international shows. Today the Emuier are shown as a permanent exhibition in St. George.
