Course of the road

The Carnarvon Highway is a trunk road in the southeast of the Australian state of Queensland . It is 573 km long and runs in a south-north direction. It begins in Mungindi on the New South Wales border and ends in Rolleston in central Queensland. The section between Roma and Rolleston is known as Carnarvon Developmental Road . The Carnarvon Highway got its name from the mountain range of the same name, an extension of the Great Dividing Range . The Carnarvon Range is at the northern end of the highway and is partially protected as a national park .

course

The Carnarvon Highway begins in Mungindi, a small town on the border between New South Wales and Queensland. The boundary follows the course of the Barwon River at this point . Since the Carnarvon Highway does not begin in the middle of the bridge over the Barwon River, it also runs a little way in New South Wales.

The highway runs north from Mungindi. After about 120 km the Barwon Highway (S85) joins from the east from Goondiwindi and the Carnarvon Highway reaches the city of St. George after another 45 km . St. George is an important traffic junction in southern Queensland, in which, in addition to the Carnarvon Highway, the Castlereagh Highway (A55), the Balonne Highway (S49) and the Moonie Highway (S49) meet.

The next larger town on the Carnarvon Highway is the city of Roma , approx. 200 km north of St George. The Roma area is a major supplier of natural gas in Australia. In Roma the Warrego Highway (NA2) crosses in a west-east direction. This leads from Charleville in western Queensland to Ipswich , a suburb of the state capital Brisbane .

North of Roma, the Carnarvon Highway continues under the name Carnarvon Developmental Road . It runs through sparsely populated areas in the western foothills of the Great Dividing Range. After about 200 km, the only access to Carnarvon National Park and Carnarvon Gorge branches off. After another 60 km, the end of the Carnarvon Highway is reached in '' Rolleston ''. From here the Dawson Highway (A7 / S60) lead to Gladstone on the Queensland coast or to Springsure , where the Gregory Highway (A7) continues north.

The highest point on the highway is 347 m, the lowest is 158 m.
