The Carnarvon Range is a mountain country in central Queensland , Australia . It is a 160 km long plateau and part of the Great Dividing Range . It was first explored by the European explorer Ludwig Leichhardt and Thomas Livingstone Mitchell named it after Henry Herbert, 4th Earl of Carnarvon .

The eastern areas form a plateau, the Consuelo Tableland . There are rare Aboriginal paintings and impressive sandstone gorges , including Carnarvon Gorge . The Carnarvon National Park protects large parts of the mountains .

The mountain country marks the northernmost extension of the Murray-Darling Basin . This is where the Fitzroy River , the Warrego River , the Dawson River , the Merivale River and the Nogoa River have their source .

The cycad species Macrozamia moorei grows in the Carnarvon Range .
