Springsure is a small town in Queensland , 66 km south of Emerald and 765 km northwest of Brisbane .

The first European to come to the area was Ludwig Leichhardt , who was later followed by European settlers. In the area around Springsure, opals were found in volcanic rock, rhyolite and basalt in 1872 . However, the opals were hardly economically viable because the opals were cracked and easily broken after they were exposed. In addition, there was a loss of the play of colors under the atmospheric conditions.

There are various coal mines around Springsure, such as the Minerva and the Rolleton mine , which are of economic importance. Livestock and the cultivation of sunflowers, sorghum , wheat and chickpeas are important for Springsure today .

tourism
