Emerald is a city in Queensland , Australia . Emerald is located about 900 kilometers northwest of the capital Brisbane , 270 kilometers west of Rockhampton and about 410 kilometers east of Longreach . Emerald is located in the administrative district of Central Highlands Regional Council of Queensland on nogoa river and a few kilometers south of the Tropic of Capricorn . The city is at the intersection of the Capricorn Highway and Gregory Highway .

economy

Emerald is an important center and supply point for many branches of the economy in the region. In the area, coal is mined in large open-cast mines , which is brought by rail to the port of Rockhampton and shipped from there. To the west of the city are the Gemfields , where large amounts of sapphires are mined. The sapphire deposits here are the largest in the southern hemisphere.

The Maraboon Reservoir is located south of the city . With an area of up to 150 square kilometers, this is one of the largest artificial lakes in Australia. The water supply through the Maraboon Reservoir enabled farmers in the area to establish a profitable cotton industry . In addition, grapes , citrus fruits and cereals are grown on a large scale. The Maraboon Reservoir is also a local recreation center for the residents of Emerald and the surrounding villages with very good opportunities for all kinds of water sports .

Emerald has experienced a sharp increase in population in recent years, which has now reached almost 14,000. This is primarily due to the booming mining industry and its supply and service sectors, but also to the upswing in agriculture and the associated need for personnel.
