Career

Started in Australia

Langerak near Melbourne Victory (2009)

After Langerak went undetected by Australian youth development programs for a long time, he was accepted into the Australian Institute of Sport in 2006. On the recommendation of the association's goalkeeping coach Tony Franken , Langerak completed a trial training session with the reigning champions Melbourne Victory in 2007 and finally received a two-year contract. The first two years in the professional field Langerak remained substitute keeper behind Michael Theoklitos , he made his league debut on the last day of the 2007/08 season. When the championship win in the 2008/09 season Langerak came to a total of four inserts.

After the departure of Theoklitos in the summer of 2009, Langerak was in a duel with newcomer Glen Moss for the vacant place on the goalkeeper position. The five years older New Zealand national goalkeeper Moss prevailed, Langerak replaced him after the 14th matchday when the team lost 4-0 in the home game against the Central Coast Mariners . He remained from then on the rest of the season goalkeeper of Melbourne and reached the championship final against rivals Sydney FC with the team . The game finally decided Sydney 4-2 on penalties, a saved penalty from Langerak was ultimately not enough.

Borussia Dortmund

Langerak at BVB (2013)

On May 13, 2010, Borussia Dortmund announced that they would sign Langerak from July 1, 2010. He replaced the previous substitute goalkeeper Marc Ziegler , who left BVB for Stuttgart , and was initially intended to be number 2 behind long-time goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller . On October 7, 2010 he was awarded the Harry Kewell Medal by the Australian Professional Footballers' Association as Australian Young Player of the Year .

He made his Bundesliga debut on February 26, 2011 (24th matchday) in a 3-1 win in the away game against FC Bayern Munich , when he replaced Roman Weidenfeller, who had lost due to injury. This game should be his only one this season. With Borussia he was German champion at the end of the season . Almost a year after the championship, Langerak became German champion for the second time in his career on match day 32 of the 2011/12 season with Borussia Dortmund and was able to defend the title from 2011. He himself played twice in this championship season.

On May 12, 2012, he came on as a substitute for the injured Roman Weidenfeller in the first half of the DFB Cup final and won the first double in club history with BVB. After the end of the 2011/12 season, he extended his contract, which ran until June 30, 2014, by two years until 2016. Towards the end of 2014, Langerak replaced the weak Weidenfeller for some Bundesliga games (including a game in the Champions League) in goal. Langerak was in goal at all DFB Cup games this season (2014/15) . After the semi-final match against FC Bayern Munich, Langerak was called a hero by the fans because he saved Mario Götze's penalty in the penalty shoot-out and thereby secured BVB's place in the final .

VfB Stuttgart

For the season 2015/16 Langerak moved to VfB Stuttgart . On June 29, 2015, he signed a contract with Stuttgart, which was dated to the end of June 2018. The aim of this transfer for VfB was to replace the actual goalkeeper Sven Ulreich in goal, who had surprisingly switched to Bayern Munich before the season . Langerak should compete with the Pole Przemysław Tytoń , also a newcomer, and recommend himself for a regular place in the goal. But Langerak was seriously injured in training weeks before the start of the season, so that he has not been able to play against 1. FC Köln (1: 3) since the first game of the season on August 16, 2015 . On January 23, 2016 he was in the second half of the game against 1. FC Köln for the first time in a Bundesliga game in the VfB squad, one day later he made his competitive debut for the 2nd team in the 3rd division against SG Sonnenhof Großaspach . On February 9, Langerak played his first game for the professional team of VfB Stuttgart. He made his Bundesliga debut for Stuttgart on May 7, 2016 (33rd matchday) in the 1: 3 defeat against 1. FSV Mainz 05 .

He was the regular goalkeeper of VfB for the entire 2016/17 season and rose directly to the club as a second division champion. After the engagement of Ron-Robert Zieler, however , he sat on the bench at the beginning of the 2017/18 Bundesliga season .

Levante UD

After seven years in Germany , Langerak joined the Spanish first division club UD Levante at the end of August 2017 . In the first half of the season he only played in the Copa del Rey on November 28, 2017 against FC Girona . During the winter break, I moved to Nagoya Grampus in Japan .

Nagoya Grampus

At the beginning of January 2018, the Japanese club announced the signing of Langerak.

National team

In 2006, Langerak was part of the Australian squad at the U-19 Asian Cup , but had to give up his place in goal to Tando Velaphi after the opening game . In August 2010, the Australian interim coach Han Berger nominated Langerak for the international match against Slovenia . A few months later, the new national coach, Holger Osieck, listed Langerak as one of seven goalkeepers on a provisional list of 50 players with a view to the 2011 Asian Cup , but there was no nomination for the 23-man tournament.

His first appointment to the A-national team was in March 2011 for a friendly against Germany in Mönchengladbach. He made his international debut in October 2013 in a 6-0 defeat at the Prinzenparkstadion in Paris against France .

Langerak took part in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil as a substitute goalkeeper behind Mathew Ryan , but was not used.
