Mathew David Ryan (born April 8, 1992 in Plumpton , New South Wales ) is an Australian football player . The goalkeeper, who has a British passport in addition to his Australian passport, is under contract with Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League and is also Australia's national goalkeeper . With the national team, Ryan took part in both the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the 2018 World Cup in Russia . At club level he was under contract before joining Brighton & Hove Albion in Australia, in Spain with Valencia CF and in Belgium.

Career

Central Coast Mariners

Ryan played in the youth division of the Blacktown City Demons . In 2009 he moved to the Central Coast Mariners , which was synonymous with his first major career leap. In the 2009/10 season Ryan was for the first time in some games in the squad of the Mariners, but was not used. From March to June 2010 he played again for three months on loan with his old club Blacktown City Demons. When he then returned to the Mariners (2010/11 season), he replaced Jess Vanstrattan after the third match day as number one in the Mariners goal. He played a total of 31 games this season. The Mariners were only defeated in the A-League final against Brisbane Roar on penalties. In the 2011/12 season he made his debut for the Mariners in the AFC Champions League . In his final season in the jersey of the Central Coast Mariners, he won the Australian championship and made his debut for the Australian national football team .

Club Bruges

In the summer of 2013 he moved to Club Brugge . In Bruges he was signed as a regular goalkeeper and made his debut in both the Jupiler League and the Europa League qualification .

Valencia CF and loan to Genk

For the season 2015/16, Ryan moved to Valencia . He signed a six-year contract with the Blanquinegros and made his debut on the first day of the new season in a goalless draw with Rayo Vallecano .

On January 30, 2017, Ryan was loaned to KRC Genk for one season . There he played a total of 17 games, 11 of them in the play-offs for qualifying for the Europa League . Genk finally failed in the final at KV Ostend .

Brighton & Hove Albion

Ryan moved to the Premier League promoted Brighton & Hove Albion for the 2017/18 season . He signed a five-year contract with the Seagulls from the south of England.

National team

Ryan made his debut in December 2012 for the Australian national soccer team in the game against the North Korean national soccer team (1-1). At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, he was in goal in all three Australian games. The Socceroos lost each of their games against the Netherlands , Chile and Spain despite good performances .

When he won the 2015 Asian Cup , Ryan played through every game from the first minute to the last and was then voted the tournament's best goalkeeper. He also took part in the 2017 Confed Cup in Russia. He was also in the squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where Australia was eliminated in the preliminary round after two defeats against France and Peru and a draw against Denmark . Ryan was in goal in all three games.
