Daniel Johnson "Dan" Burn (born May 9, 1992 in Blyth ) is an English football player . The tall central defender was initially in the lower divisions in promotion teams such as Yeovil Town and Wigan Athletic before moving to the first division side Brighton & Hove Albion in August 2018 .
Career
Darlington FC
Burn grew up in the northeast of England and was a supporter of Newcastle United , and especially Alan Shearer . In the region he was active as a youth player for Newcastle United and for the locally based teams New Hartley , Blyth Town and Blyth Spartans . He also played for the latter club when he was noticed by a Darlington FC talent scout at the age of 16 . Burn, who had just started working part-time for the supermarket chain ASDA , signed the first professional contract in Darlington in July 2009.
The then fourth division suffered from major financial problems and Burn was promoted to the heavily thinned first team squad during the 2009/10 season. On December 12, 2009 he made his debut by substitution in the 19th minute against Torquay United , which resulted in a solid 0-5. His other three appearances ended in defeats and the season with relegation as bottom of the table . Burn was then reassigned to the club's academy for the remainder of the 2010 calendar year, but in January 2011 coach Mark Cooper called him back to the first team. In the ten fifth division appearances, he not only knew how to please Cooper, but was suddenly also in the focus of more prominent clubs, including the then first division club Fulham . In April 2011, the central defender with a strong header finally moved to the British capital.
Fulham FC
In Fulham Burn was part of the reserve team under Billy McKinlay in the 2011/12 season . At the end of September 2012, Fulham loaned him to the third division club Yeovil Town for a month . The first use on September 25, 2012 against Preston North End was turbulent when Burn underwent an own goal and only a minute later he shortened "on the other side" to 2: 3 final result. In the following years, the newcomer established itself in Yeovil's team and the loan deal was extended twice - ultimately until the end of the season . This was crowned with a great success when Burn reached the playoff final for promotion to the second division with Yeovil. Burn scored a goal for a 2-1 win against Brentford FC and secured the club's first access to the second division in the club's history.
Upon his return, Burn signed a new contract dated 2015 in Fulham. He was also loaned out again, now to the second division club Birmingham City . There he was a fixture in 24 championship games before he was recalled again on January 2, 2014. Two days later he also played for the "Cottagers" in the FA Cup and two weeks later he played for the first time in the Premier League against Arsenal (0-2). After a handful of other probation options, a muscle injury put him out of action for more than a month before making his comeback in a 4-1 loss to Stoke City , which, however, sealed the club's relegation to the second division. Although he temporarily led the team as captain in the subsequent 2014/15 season and signed a contract that was extended by one year until 2016 in January 2015, Burn found himself on the bench more often and only played 22 competitive games. It was only under the new coach Slaviša Jokanović that Burn became a fixture in the middle of the defense. Since he was seen as an important factor on the road to relegation , Fulham initially intended a new contract for Burn. Eventually, however, the engagement ended in summer 2016 after a transfer request to Sheffield United had been rejected in January 2016.
Wigan Athletic
The next station was the second division Wigan Athletic . There Burn signed a three-year contract and in the 2016/17 season he stood out positively from a team that was fighting to stay in the league. In the end, he won the club's internal election for the best player, but rose with his men in the third division . In the following year, he returned directly to the second division as champions of EFL League One . Burn missed just one of 46 league games and scored five goals - more than in his entire career. In August 2018, the first division club Brighton & Hove Albion announced the signing of a four-year contract with Burn, who in return was kept on loan in Wigan until January 2019.
Brighton & Hove Albion
The first appearance for Brighton was at the end of January 2019 in the FA Cup against West Bromwich Albion (0-0). In the Premier League, Burn celebrated his premiere for the "Seagulls" on the first match day of the 2019/20 season at Watford FC as part of a three- way defensive chain alongside Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy .
