Shane Patrick Michael Duffy (born January 1, 1992 in Derry , Northern Ireland ) is an Irish national football player who has played for the Republic of Ireland since 2014 . Previously, he also played for several Northern Irish junior teams.

Club career

As a teenager, Duffy played Derry Gaelic football for Doire Colmcille CLG and football for Foyle Harps in his hometown . At the Victory Shield tournament for U-16 teams, he fell on David Moyes , the coach of Everton FC . In November 2008 he moved to Everton and played for the U-18 team. After appearances for the reserve team, he was substituted on for the first time with the professional team for the injured Sylvain Distin in the group stage of the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League 2009/10 against AEK Athens . In the next game against BATE Baryssau he was then used in the home stadium for 90 minutes. Everton lost 1-0, but were already second in the group and reached the sixteenth finals. There they won the home game 2-1 against Sporting Lisbon , but lost the second leg 3-0. For both games he was not taken into account. In the Premier League season he only sat 16 times on the bench. After he sat six times at Everton on the bench in the 2010/11 season , he was loaned to the second division club Burnley FC in March 2011 , for which he only came to one use and sat five times on the bench. Even after returning to Everton, he only sat on the bench for three games. For the 2011/12 season he was loaned to the third division Scunthorpe United , where he made 18 league appearances. He returned to Everton in January 2012 and made four top division games and seven bank meetings. In the 2012/13 season he sat 24 times on the bench, from which he came on only once on December 22, 2012 in the third minute of stoppage time against West Ham United after Darron Gibson had received the red card a minute earlier .

For the 2013/14 season he was awarded to the second division club Yeovil Town , for which he made 37 appearances. After the club was relegated to the third division as bottom of the table, he returned to Everton, but was given to the second division club Blackburn Rovers . With the Rovers, he finished ninth in the first season and then 15th. In the FA Cup 2014/15 , the Rovers failed in the quarter-finals, in which he was not used, after a repeat game at Liverpool and a year later in the fifth main round. For the 2016/17 season Duffy moved to Brighton & Hove Albion . With the Seagulls he reached the runner-up and promotion to the Premier League . As 15th and 17th, relegation was avoided twice.

National team

Duffy went through the Northern Irish junior teams up to the U-21 and played u. a. in September 2009 in qualification for the U-21 European Championship 2011 . At the age of 17 he was invited to an A international match between Northern Ireland and Italy, but was not used.

In 2010 he decided to play for the Republic of Ireland in the future , against which the IFA , the Northern Irish Football Association, sued the CAS . In April he was invited to a training camp by Giovanni Trapattoni , but was initially not used because he suffered a serious injury in the training camp. In October 2010 he then took part with the Irish U-19s in the first qualifying round of the 2011 U-19 European Championship . The Irish finished second in the group and thus qualified for the second qualifying round, in which he then did not participate. In 2011 and 2012 he played six games in qualifying for the U-21 European Championship in 2013 . After a 1-0 defeat against Turkey in the penultimate game, the Irish had no chance to qualify. In the last game, in which he was not taken into account, they were able to cause group winners Italy the only defeat.

In February 2012 he was nominated for the injured Richard Dunne for a friendly against the Czech Republic . For the first time, however, he came more than two years later on June 7, 2014 in the friendly against Costa Rica , for the Costa Ricans the last test before the 2014 World Cup, for which Ireland was not qualified. He was in the starting line-up and played for over 90 minutes. But he had to wait 21 months for the next game, because only after the successful European Championship qualification he was used again for 90 minutes in a 1-0 friendly against Switzerland on March 25 and was "Man of the match".

On May 12, 2016 he was appointed by national coach Martin O'Neill in the provisional 35-player squad for the EM . He was then also included in the final squad. After a 3-0 defeat against Belgium, he got his first chance in the decisive third group game against Italy. He played the whole game that the team won 1-0 and thus made it to the round of 16. There he played again from the beginning. After opponents France had turned the game shortly before and took the lead, he was sent off in the 66th minute due to an emergency brake . After that, Ireland failed to score and were eliminated.

In the qualification for the 2018 World Cup , which began after the European Championship , he was part of the starting eleven, could not be used in the first game because of the red card , but was used in eight out of ten group games. Second behind Serbia , the Irish qualified for the play-offs of the best runners-up in the group. Here they met the Danes . After a goalless draw in Denmark, they lost the home game 5-1, where he scored the goal for the Irish. In the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League he was featured in four games, including two goalless games against Denmark and losing 1-0 and 4-1 to Wales . In qualifying for the 2020 European Football Championship , he was used in all eight games, scored a goal in the 1-1 draw in Denmark and led the Irish for the first time as captain on the field in the last game. In the end it was only enough for 3rd place. Since the group opponents in the Nations League group qualified directly for the European Championship finals, the Irish still have the chance to qualify via the playoffs in March 2020.
