Player career

Maccabi Haifa

Biram Kayal made his debut at the end of the 2005/06 season in the Ligat ha'Al for his youth club Maccabi Haifa and won his first Israeli championship with the team. After another season as a supplementary player, Kayal secured a regular place in the midfield of Maccabi in the 2007/08 season, but only reached a fifth place in the league with his club. In terms of sport, the club was more successful in 2008/09 by winning the eleventh national championship six points ahead of Hapoel Tel Aviv . After a play-off success over the Austrian champions FC Red Bull Salzburg , Maccabi moved into the group stage of the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League . In Group A, the team remained goalless and without a point win after games against FC Bayern Munich , Girondins Bordeaux and Juventus Turin and were eliminated from bottom of the table.

Celtic Glasgow

Biram Kayal moved to the Scottish first division club Celtic Glasgow on July 29, 2010 and signed a four-year contract. Under coach Neil Lennon , he made his debut on August 19, 2010 in a 2-0 home win over FC Utrecht in the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League , but was eliminated from the European Cup a week later after a 4-0 away defeat. In the Scottish Premier League 2010/11 , Kayal, who was awarded Player of the Month in January 2011, narrowly missed the championship with just one point behind long-term rivals Glasgow Rangers . But he and his team secured the title in the Scottish FA Cup 2010/11 by beating FC Motherwell 3-0 in the final after Celtic defeated the Glasgow Rangers 2-2 and 1-0 in the quarter-finals. Celtic suffered a defeat against Rangers in the final of the Scottish League Cup 2010/11 with 1: 2 after extra time and missed the second cup win of the season.

After a good start to the 2011/12 season, Kayal was seriously injured in a 1-0 derby win over the Rangers on December 28, 2011 and fell out against Heart of Midlothian (5-0) until his comeback on May 13, 2012 . A good two and a half years later, he moved to the second division team Brighton & Hove Albion in January 2015 for an unspecified transfer fee .

Brighton & Hove Albion

In his first full season 2015/16 for the "Seagulls" Kayal completed 43 league games and narrowly missed direct promotion to the Premier League. In the next attempt he succeeded in promotion and he was part of the team in the decisive 2-1 home win against Wigan Athletic . In preparation for the 2017/18 first division season, Kayal broke his leg, so that he only made his debut in the Premier League in December 2017. In September 2018 he signed a new contract until June 2020.

Charlton Athletic

In August 2019, Kayal signed on on loan for the entire 2019/20 season with the second division club Charlton Athletic .

Israeli national team (2008–)

After various appearances in Israeli junior national teams, Biram Kayal made his debut on September 6, 2008 in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup against Switzerland. Israel only came fourth behind Switzerland, Greece and Latvia and thus missed out on participation in the World Cup in South Africa. Kayal scored his first goal on March 26, 2011 in qualifying for the 2012 European Football Championship in a 2-1 home win over Latvia. As third in the table behind Greece and Croatia, Israel again missed participation in an international tournament.
