Blyth is a small town in Northumberland, England . The city, located at the mouth of the River Blyth in the North Sea , was once an important port and shipyard city. It was the administrative seat of the Blyth Valley district, which was dissolved in 2009 .

Blyth was once an endpoint of the North Eastern Railway , a major export port for coal (especially from the Ashington coalfield, 30 miles away ), and a Royal Navy port and shipyard location. For example, the first British "aircraft carrier", the aircraft mother ship HMS Ark Royal (1914) , was built by remodeling at the Blyth Dry Docks & Shipbuilding Company .

The city now serves as the "dormitory" of Newcastle upon Tyne . The first offshore - wind farm in Europe inaugurated in 2000 off the coast of Blyth in operation. Blyth has been twinning with Solingen since 1962 .
