Ashington location

Ashington is a city in Northumberland in England and has a population of 27,900. Although the first documented mention of a settlement on this site under the name Essende comes from 1170, the city did not develop until the 1840s when William John Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck, 5th Duke of Portland , began to settle workers who were supposed to work in his recently opened mine . No coal has been mined here since 1988.

Ashington is about 7 km east of Morpeth and about 23 km north of Newcastle upon Tyne .
