Sheila Armstrong

Sheila Armstrong (born August 13, 1942 in Ashington ) is an English opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Sheila Armstrong received her vocal training at the International Center for Music Studies at Newcastle University in Newcastle and at the Royal Academy of Music in London . In 1965 she won the Kathleen Ferrier Memorial Scholarship .

She made her operatic debut in 1965 at Sadler's Wells Theater in London as the chambermaid Despina in the opera Così fan tutte by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart . From 1973 she sang at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden , where she made her debut with the role of Marzelline in Beethoven's only opera Fidelio .

Armstrong performed at the Glyndebourne Festival several times during her career . There she sang Belinda in Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell in 1966 , Zerlina in Don Giovanni by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1967 and in 1970 Fiorilla in Il turco in Italia by Gioacchino Rossini . In 1970 and 1974 she sang the role of Pamina in the opera Die Zauberflöte , also by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

In 1973 she was heard in a BBC production of the operetta Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss .

She made a name for herself primarily in Great Britain , but also sang in Italy . In 1971 she made her American debut with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra . Also in 1971 she sang concerts with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra under Zubin Mehta .

Her repertoire includes pieces by Rossini , Donizetti and Mozart . Armstrong was also considered a specialist in the interpretation of the sacred works of Johann Sebastian Bach . She has performed several times with the Munich Bach Choir and the Munich Bach Orchestra .

Armstrong also made a name for herself as a singer of oratorios and had guest engagements in Europe , North America and Asia .
