Marc Ziegler (born June 13, 1976 in Blieskastel ) is a former German soccer goalkeeper .
Career
Beginnings in Stuttgart
In 1994 he moved to VfB Stuttgart . After goalkeeper Eike Immel had held his regular seat at VfB Stuttgart for many years, coach Rolf Fringer decided in 1995 to give young talent Ziegler a chance in the Swabian goal. Then Immel decided to move to Manchester City . The 19-year-old Ziegler was now given preference over long-term substitute Eberhard Trautner and was permanently in the VfB goal in five games during the 1995/96 season . However, he could not convince, and at the end of the season, VfB finished tenth with the second most goals conceded in the league (only outbid by Eintracht Frankfurt ).
Via detours to Austria
In the following three years he only had twelve appearances, and after a short stop at Arminia Bielefeld , he finally moved to Turkey to Bursaspor in 2000 , but then moved to the Austrian first division club FC Tirol Innsbruck in the winter of 2001 , where he became Austrian champions in 2001 and 2002 has been. The 1.92 m tall goalkeeper stayed 1085 minutes without conceding a goal at FC Tirol from May 15 to September 22, 2001, a record in the Austrian Bundesliga. In the following season he achieved third place with Austria Wien , but was only used here sporadically.
Return to Germany
In the 2004/05 season he did not get beyond the role of substitute, although he had been the goalkeeper of the German first division Hannover 96 the previous season . He then moved to his youth club 1. FC Saarbrücken in the 2nd Bundesliga, for which he played another season, and then returned to Arminia Bielefeld.
Time at Borussia Dortmund
In 2007 Ziegler signed a three-year contract as the second goalkeeper with Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund . Due to a suspension of the first goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller , he was used there on the third day of the 2007/08 season, where he did not concede a goal in three games. When Weidenfeller had to undergo shoulder surgery and was canceled for the second half of the 2007/08 season, he was represented by Marc Ziegler in the Borussia goal. Jens Lehmann had previously been offered the six-month post , which he refused for private reasons. Due to a torn muscle fiber in his thigh, Ziegler was again represented by amateur goalkeeper Marcel Höttecke for the last four games of the season as well as in the game against Hannover 96 . From the 2008/09 season Ziegler was again the second goalkeeper behind Roman Weidenfeller. With Borussia Dortmund, Ziegler was in the DFB-Pokal final in Berlin on April 19, 2008 , which he lost 2-1 to Bayern Munich .
Change to VfB Stuttgart
For the 2010/11 season Marc Ziegler returned to VfB Stuttgart , where he signed a contract until the end of June 2013. Ziegler was the substitute goalkeeper behind Sven Ulreich at VfB . On December 1, 2010 he played his first game after his return in the group stage of the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League for the Stuttgart team, who had already qualified for the next round, against BSC Young Boys . In the second leg of the sixteenth-finals of the Europa League against Benfica Lisbon on February 24, 2011, Ziegler was in the starting line-up and was replaced by his colleague Ulreich in the 52nd minute after a collision due to a severe concussion. After Ulreich had maintained his regular place, Ziegler did not play another competitive game for VfB in the following two years. At the end of the 2012/13 season, Ziegler's expiring contract was not extended.
