Serafim Michael Theo (formerly Theoklitos, born February 11, 1981 in Melbourne ) is an Australian football goalkeeper with Greek roots.

Career

Theoklitos began his career in the Victorian Premier League with the Bulleen Inter Kings and Bulleen Zebras . In the 2000/01 season he had his first engagement in the top division of Australia, the National Soccer League (NSL) at South Melbourne , but was not used during the season. In the 2001/02 season he played for New Zealand NSL club Football Kingz and was a regular goalkeeper there.

The following season he made the jump to English third division club Blackpool and was there behind Phil Barnes substitute goalkeeper. A ligament damage in his knee kept him away from play for a large part of the second half of the season and his contract was not extended at the end of the season after a total of three competitive games for Blackpool. Back in Australia he played again for South Melbourne and after setting the NSL at the end of the 2003/04 season with the Bulleen Zebras.

In 2005 he signed with Melbourne Victory in the newly founded professional league A-League and was in competition with the goalkeeper of the Australian Olympic team, Eugene Galekovic . An unusual rotation system from coach Ernie Merrick saw the same number of appearances for both goalkeepers in the 2005/06 season. After the season ended with a disappointing seventh place, the goalkeeper position was permanently assigned for the new season and Theoklitos was able to prevail. As the winner of the regular season they moved into the finals and prevailed there first in the semifinals and then in the championship finals against Adelaide. Theoklitos remained in eleven of 20 games played without conceding and received the award as the best goalkeeper in the league. The following season was disappointing for Melbourne, as reigning champions you could not qualify for the finals. Theoklitos was voted the best goalkeeper in the league again, despite the poor season performance of his team. In the 2008/09 season you could win the national championship title for the second time after three games in the finals against Adelaide.

In March 2009 he was in the Australian national team for the first time , but was only reserve keeper behind his former opponent Galekovic in the 1-0 defeat against Kuwait. In the summer of 2009 Theoklitos rejected a contract extension with Melbourne and moved to the English third division club Norwich City on a free transfer . At Norwich, his league debut against Colchester United was a debacle when he let several durable balls pass in the 7-1 home defeat. Norwich coach Bryan Gunn , who had signed Theoklitos, was dismissed a few days later because of this result, his successor Paul Lambert relied on Ben Alnwick in the goalkeeping position and did not consider Theoklitos on the following game days. After an injury to Alnwick, Lambert decided to loan Fraser Forster and said Theoklitos could leave the club in the event of an offer. In March 2010, his contract was finally terminated by mutual agreement and he returned to the Australian A-League. There he signed a three-year contract with Brisbane Roar .

In August 2012 it became known that Theoklitos had shortened his last name to Theo by deed poll .
