Bryan James Gunn (born December 22, 1963 in Thurso ) is a former Scottish football player and coach who was active in both functions for the English club Norwich City .

Player career

FC Aberdeen (1980–1986)

Bryan Gunn began his career at the Scottish first division club FC Aberdeen, coached by Alex Ferguson . Between 1980 and 1986 he did not get beyond a reserve role behind the goalkeeper Jim Leighton . With Aberdeen he won the European Cup Winners' Cup 1982/83 with a 2-1 after extra time against Real Madrid , but remained in the final without a use. In 1984 and 1985 he and his team secured the title in the Scottish Championship. In October 1986 he moved to the English first division club Norwich City for £ 100,000 .

Norwich City (1986-1998)

In Norwich he replaced the English goalkeeper Chris Woods , who had moved to the Glasgow Rangers . The promoted by Ken Brown reached a good fifth place in the Football League First Division 1986/87 . Another increase in the league took place two years later under the new coach Dave Stringer in the 1988/89 season as fourth. After three years of declining league performance, the team coached by Mike Walker surprisingly reached third place in the 1992/93 Premier League and thus the best league placement in the club's history. With this placement, Norwich qualified for the 1993/94 UEFA Cup and, after successes over Vitesse Arnheim (3-0 and 0-0) and Bayern Munich (2-1 and 1-1), reached the third round. There was against the eventual title holder Inter Milan with two 0-1 defeats. The team owed a large part of their success over FC Bayern to the good-natured goalkeeper Bryan Gunn. A year later, Gunn, who was injured for a long time in this season, rose in the Premier League in 1994/95 for the first time with his team from the first division.

Hibernian Edinburgh

After two years in the second division, he lost his regular place to Andy Marshall in the 1997/98 season and moved to Hibernian Edinburgh in February 1998, initially on loan . With the Scottish first division club, he rose at the end of the season as bottom of the table from the first division. In the summer of 1998, the club finally acquired the transfer rights to Gunn, who, however, was injured at the beginning of the season and ended his career prematurely during the season.

Scottish National Team (1990-1994)

Bryan Gunn made his debut on May 16, 1990 in a 3-1 defeat against Egypt in the Scottish national team and then took part with Scotland in the 1990 World Cup in Italy. However, Gunn remained without commitment and retired with his team after the preliminary round. His sixth and final international match was against the Netherlands on May 27, 1994.

Coaching career

After he had previously been active in various functions for Norwich City, he took over on January 16, 2009 interim as the successor to Glenn Roeder, the coaching post at the second division and won his opening game 4-0 against FC Barnsley. On January 21, he was then introduced as the new head coach. However, the team's performance deteriorated in the following months and led to relegation from the Football League Championship 2008/09 . Norwich lost the opening game in Football League One 2009/10 7-1 to Colchester United, which led to the dismissal of Bryan Gunn on August 14, 2009.

Others

His son Angus (* 1996) is also a soccer goalkeeper.
