Eugen-Josip "Eugene" Galekovic (born June 12, 1981 in Melbourne ) is an Australian football player of Croatian descent. The goalkeeper has been under contract with Adelaide United in the A-League since 2007 .
Club career
Galekovic played between 1999 and 2004 with the Melbourne Knights , Eastern Pride and South Melbourne in the National Soccer League . After the league was closed in 2004, like many other Australian players, he ventured abroad. His guest appearance at the Portuguese first division club SC Beira-Mar was not crowned with success and after a year and only two league appearances he returned to Australia, where a new league format was created with the professional league A-League .
He signed with the newly founded club Melbourne Victory and was there with Michael Theoklitos in competition for the place in goal. An unusual rotation system from coach Ernie Merrick saw the same number of appearances for both goalkeepers in the 2005/06 season. After the season ended with a disappointing seventh place, the goalkeeper position was permanently awarded for the new season, while Theoklitos was able to prevail. Galekovic spent most of the 2006/07 season on the bench, including in the championship final against Adelaide United .
For the 2007/08 season he moved to rival Adelaide and was able to assert himself there after an injury to regular goalkeeper Daniel Beltrame in goal. In 2009 he was with Adelaide in the final against his former club Melbourne, but had to admit defeat there after a goal by Tom Pondeljak 1-0. Even before the finals, he was named goalkeeper of the year. Although Adelaide finished the following season 2009/10 on the last place in the table, he was again named best goalkeeper.
National team
Galekovic took part in 2004 with the Australian Olympic team as a regular goalkeeper at the Olympic football tournament in Greece. In May 2004 Galekovic was part of the Australian squad for the first time in two friendly matches against Turkey, but was not used. It was not until the beginning of 2009 that he made his first appearance in the goal of the Australian senior team and subsequently played a total of four international matches as part of the qualification for the 2011 Asian Cup . In summer 2010 he traveled to South Africa as a reserve player with the national team for the World Cup . Mark Schwarzer , Adam Federici and Brad Jones were nominated by national coach Pim Verbeek as goalkeepers in the 23-man squad, but Galekovic was supposed to stay with the team during the World Cup. When Jones left a few days before the start of the tournament for personal reasons, Galekovic moved into the World Cup squad with special permission from FIFA .
